How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Here is an example of a picture from my magazine compared to a real magazine. These both have similarities and differences, and these all related to the target audience.

The social group I am representing are students aged between 17 - 25. These people are mostly white males. These people will have a low income because these are mostly students but these people are aspires because they aspire to have the entire latest stuff and be rich. These people will often have low paid jobs is a job at all and still live at home or live in cheap accommodation because that’s what they can afford. Often then money they make is disposable income meaning they will spend it. This will be more aimed at students at either college or university. These people are categorized as C2 and D because these people are students don’t have a lot of money and because their standards of living. These will often be students and living in urban areas. This is defiantly aimed more towards males because of the genre and the style of the magazine.

Similarities
The posture of the people in both photos is similar in terms of they are not standing straight they look relaxed and slightly slanted, this makes it more informal. The angle these picture were taken are similar both slightly angled, this makes the band look bigger and stand out more. The lighting is the same, it is bright and clear to see. Both magazines use direct eye contact from the band members and this is to help draw the target audience in as well. Both magazines have white males on the front of them, and class is represented in my magazine by the people in the photograph are all young students and this fits in with my target audience. In kerrang these are also white males and the class is represented through what the band members wear.

Differences
The angle where the shot is taken is different because my picture uses a mid-range show showing most of the body compared to the kerrang magazine where it’s a closer up shot showing the head and shoulders of the band. The setting of each photo is different my photo is set in an urban setting making it fit with my target audience compared to the AC DC photo where they have a blank background behind them. In my magazine the band are smiling and look more relaxed, and this is to fit with my target audience and genre to make it more idealistic for the magazine and to show the band in its natural state. Compared to AC DC whereby they look both more aggressive and have more attitude, this shows the band in their natural state and links in with Kerrangs target audience. The costume used is very different, this both links to the band and the way they look, my picture has the band wearing more subtle fashionable clothes referring to the target audience and what they expect to see them wearing compared to Kerrang whereby the band are wearing school uniform, this also links to the attitude that this piece shows. The stereotypes of my magazine will be different of that from kerrang because my magazine makes the band look natural, and fits in with today’s society compared to Kerrang whereby the picture represented in a positive way compared to the mainstream which would represent this negatively.

My magazine does have a pro-consumerist stance because this is how this magazine will make its income, by advertising products such as; cd, DVDs and some (very few) fashion items.
