In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Conventions are a set of different features related to the design of a magazine. Conventions relate to a number of different aspects that a magazine may contain such as the size of the main image, cover lines etc. Conventions relate to the type of product, for example a newspaper is likely to have similar conventions to another newspaper and you know what to expect from them. This is like magazines as well, all magazines have their own different features and these are all linked and make a certain type of product. Some magazines are more conventional depending on the subject matter and the genre of the piece.
My magazine is more genre specific with a soft rock theme running through my magazine. My magazine is for the music lovers of this genre and my magazine is aiming for them because there are very few soft rock music magazines out there. My magazine has content about different bands, gigs and all soft rock music related content. In addition to this my magazine also has content on the latest film releases adding something extra to this magazine. I have taken some of my influences from both Kerrang! and NME these are both big popular music magazines and combine a deep music content as well as also having a bit about film releases and other different things like that. My magazine has a similar layout to the kerrang! and my magazine has similar content to NME, both which have influenced me when designing and building a magazine.
The title of my magazine is synergy; this means the working together of two things. This could represent the working together of music and the magazine with my target audience. This is places at the tip of the magazine in the centre so that my target audience can spot it easily and be drawn to this piece. My music magazine shows that it is aiming for a soft race group because of its style, layout, font and colour coding. All these things distinguish that’s its not a heavy metal or punk magazine have.
Everything in this shot is composed to make the image look more realistic and natural, and is meant to represent the band looking relaxed. The angle these picture were taken are similar both slightly angled, this makes the band look bigger and stand out more. The lighting was used to make it look bright enough to see clearly what was in the picture. This picture also uses direct eye contact from all the band members and this is to help draw the target audience in as well.
The angle from where my shot is taken is a mid-range show showing most of the. The setting of each photo is different my photo is a blank background behind them so this maintains the focus on my band members. The band is smiling and look more relaxed, and this is to fit with my target audience and genre to make it more idealistic for the magazine and to show the band in its natural state. The costume used to appeal to my target the band are wearing more subtle fashionable clothes referring to the target audience and my target audience expect them to look like this. One of the band members is holding a small white bag this is to draw the attention to the natural look of the piece. The picture has young white male students, looking chilled out, with a serious happy face on.
My magazine uses key media and magazine features in order to create a more realistic product. My product has a masthead which shows the brand of the magazine, with my magazine being Synergy and this then grabs the attention of the reader. This is blue on my magazine to go with the colour scheme on my magazine and to draw the reader’s attention. My magazine contains a barcode which aids the seller of this magazine to sell the product, because this will then have the correct price on the magazine. My magazine contains a main cover line which tells the reader of this magazine what this should contain. This magazine contains a main image and the image I took is meant to represent the kings of Leon and this covers most of the page because this is meant to draw the reader into the magazine. My magazine contains a Web address so the reader can go on the website to look for additional news and all the latest things going on. My magazine contains a main cover line which draws the reader into this magazine and tells the reader what type of content and information will be contained in the magazine. My magazine also has a dateline and price showing so the reader knows which issue this magazine is and how much this magazine costs. The bottom of my magazine it also has cover lines which tell the reader a bit about what my magazine contains and what they should look forward to expect. My front cover to my piece only uses 3 colours which run thorough my magazine. These colours work together and look professional so my magazine doesn’t look tacky and overdone. The language that is written in this magazine shows that it is made for students. The front cover doesn’t have loads of text, and the text it does have is spaced out around the page and is made to look like it was professionally done.
My contents page has all the normal convention that is expected on a magazine. This magazine has the same colour theme and fonts that run throughout the magazine making it look more professional. This magazine has a picture of the front cover of the magazine showing the issue. There is also a editors column giving the reader information on this month’s issue. This contents page has different images that relate to articles in this magazine and a page number is given to direct the reader to the right page. This contents page has different sections relating to features, reviews and regulars in the piece meaning my reader can focus on a section and find out more about what’s in this piece, what to expect and where to find the different articles and other information. This piece clearly states what the reader can look for and find in this magazine and this will make it easier and more efficient for the reader. The layout of this piece is similar to that of Kerrangs there is quite a lot of pictures and the information is well broken down and is on the lower half of the page.
My main article has a number of different features and conventions which create a more professional and well worked magazine layout. My magazine includes the standard features that relate to the different aspects of normal magazine layout. My main article has a main title drawing the reader into this piece. I have a kicker on my main article which can draw the attention of the reader into the piece and to develop a greater understanding of what this main article will contain. The kicker is meant to pull the reader in and make them want to read this article. Another feature my magazine has is a pull quote which draws the reader’s attention to a piece which is said in the magazine. This means that the reader is likely to be drawn to the quote and want to read this article because you want to find out why they say it and how it relates to the article. My main article also features a drop cap which is often a convention is media products like newspapers and magazine. My magazine features this to make it look more professional and to go with the layout of my piece. The main article on my piece is set in to two columns which are split onto two different pages this makes my piece easy to read and well broken up and the style goes with my magazine. The colour scheme goes with the colour scheme throughout the piece limiting the colours to only 3 so it doesn’t look tacky or overdone.
The house style of this magazine means that this will fill a gap in the market that I will hopefully exploit. I offer a soft rock magazine that has lots similarities to other magazine but also offers additional information. My magazine fills a gap in the market because there a fewer magazines out there that have the sort of features that my magazine has and under the genre of soft rock.

How did you attract/address your audience?
My target audience will be attracted to my magazine because the style and the contents of this magazine will attract the audience to buy this magazine. Being aimed at 17-25 the language used in this magazine is specifically aimed at this age range. The language used in more informal and because the audience is young the language used fits to the way they are likely to speak and this s how we attract this audience to make it fit audience so they will want this magazine because they know it’s for them.
I attracted my target audience by fitting a band that fits the genre this attracts my audience making them want to read my magazine. This is the main piece in the magazine and this can be used to draw the audience in. The colour scheme was also important in the making of this magazine. I chooses blue and yellow because they work well together and stand out these also relate to my audience. My magazine has certain features that relate to my target audience like gigs, latest film releases and other things that all draw my audience to this magazine.
